Introducing Lorette Theron, Partner VALPEO South Africa

With Lorette Theron joining as Partner in South Africa, VALPEO strengthens its global reach, not merely by placing individual leaders, but by transforming leadership capacity. Her work underscores that lasting impact often begins with subtle shifts: enhanced reflection, deeper awareness, and the readiness to grow into complexity. In South Africa’s fast-evolving landscape, Lorette will guide organisations toward a future defined not by volatility, but by clarity, maturity, and sustainably created value.

Lorette, how did your journey lead you to VALPEO?

“I’ve always been fascinated by how people think and why they do what they do. This lifelong curiosity led me to commit myself to understanding people—and the environments in which they can thrive and become the best versions of themselves. I’m particularly drawn to identifying trends and patterns in individual and organisational behaviour. For over 20 years, I’ve used proven psychological tools to support and enhance my intuition and insights.”

What shaped your path professionally?

“My journey began with a focus on pure Psychology. My academic path also included philosophy, languages, and music—fields that constantly evolve and reveal subtle, often overlooked nuances. After spending some time in Asia, I returned to South Africa to begin my psychology career, first as a psychometrist, where I gained accreditations and experience in multiple psychometric tools. Through significant dedication and sacrifice, I transitioned into a new path and eventually qualified as an Industrial and Organisational Psychologist. That gave me the best of both worlds: a focus on people, and the variety I crave.”

When did VALPEO first come into the picture?

“Over a decade ago, I was introduced to the concept of cognitive complexity through the work of Elliott Jaques. My journey with VALPEO began in 2020 when I was searching for a tool that could meaningfully assess complexity in leadership. The VALPEO paradigm immediately resonated with me. Its contextual, future-focused approach to leadership aligned deeply with my own philosophy.”

And now you’re joining VALPEO officially—why now? Why South Africa?

“Because the time is right. The year 2025 has already brought disruption and uncertainty, both locally and globally. The rapid acceleration of AI and digital transformation is simultaneously scaling businesses and unsettling entire industries. These shifts demand leaders who can adapt to exponential change while remaining ethical, grounded, and committed to long-term value creation.

In the Global South, especially South Africa positioned in Africa, which is expected to be one of the fastest-growing regions by 2030, leaders must navigate volatility, governance demands, and ethical challenges. Many leadership frameworks remain outdated, reactive, and compliance-driven rather than strategic and future-fit. The VALPEO paradigm responds directly to this need by fostering complexity-aware, values-based leadership that meets organisations where they are and helps them move forward with clarity.”

What’s your vision for applying VALPEO in the region?

“We aim to support South African leadership in building sustainable growth from within. Our mission is to reverse the brain drain, create meaningful work, and cultivate environments that attract international investment. These efforts can play a vital role in addressing the country’s high unemployment rate.

In order to position VALPEO as a premier leadership framework and solution in South Africa, people need to experience it first-hand. We’ll be launching pilot programs with select senior-level teams in future-focused organisations, and we’re establishing strategic partnerships with HR consultancies and executive search firms.”

What about SMEs and education—do they factor into your plans?

“Absolutely. Ninety-one percent of formalised businesses in South Africa are small and medium enterprises. These SMEs employ 60 percent of the workforce and contribute 34 percent to GDP. VALPEO is ideally positioned to help these organisations grow into more sustainable and commercially robust entities by aligning their business goals with a stronger people strategy.

We’re also exploring partnerships with business schools to embed leadership-in-context thinking into leadership education. This initiative aims to equip future leaders with the mindset and tools needed to navigate a rapidly changing world.”

South Africa is also heading towards an updated governance code. Is there a link?

“Yes. VALPEO aims to complement and enhance the principles of the upcoming King V Code, South Africa’s leading Code of Good Governance. By aligning with stakeholders involved in this evolving governance framework, we hope to shape how boards, executives, and organisations approach innovation, risk, and ethical leadership for years to come.”

And personally, what drives you in this work?

“What I find most fulfilling is helping individuals unlock their hidden potential and identify areas for fine-tuning. These small shifts often lead to meaningful and lasting change. The impact may begin within one person, but it ripples outward into culture, systems, and society.
