VALPEO Inspirations: What’s been stretching our minds this year
At VALPEO, we’re always exploring what makes people tick—the spark behind decisions, resilience, and growth. But inspiration doesn’t always come from studies or frameworks; sometimes, it sneaks up on us in unexpected ways: a gripping series, a poignant book, a powerful song, or a transformative podcast. This year, our international team came together to share their personal favorites—moments and stories that stretched their minds and hearts.
As the holidays approach, with fleeting moments to pause and recharge, we’d like to pass on these recommendations to you. Whether it’s something that makes you think differently, brings a smile, or offers a well-deserved escape, we hope these picks inspire you—or help you discover something new.
Things to read
Dive into the pages of ideas, stories, and thought-provoking perspectives that have captivated us this year. From transformative insights on leadership and habits to literary masterpieces, these books are a treasure trove of inspiration. Perfect for cosy evenings by the fire or your next holiday adventure.
The Code of Capital
A must-read offering a fascinating perspective on how legal frameworks and written instruments shape economic development.
The Magic Mountain
This year, I haven’t read any other book that transported me to another world as strongly as The Magic Mountain by Mann. Travel with the protagonist Hans to Switzerland and let this story inspire you as you reflect on time and other big questions that are highly relevant today.
Babel
A masterful exploration of language, power, and colonialism set against the backdrop of an alternate 19th-century Oxford. Babel challenges us to reflect on how language shapes not just communication but entire power structures—a thought-provoking read for anyone interested in leadership, culture, and transformation.
The Intelligence of Intuition
People often confuse intuition with a sixth sense or the arbitrary judgments of inept decision-makers. In this book, Gerd Gigerenzer examines the battle against intuition in the social sciences. He suggests that intuition is a form of unconscious intelligence, shaped by years of experience, that has evolved to handle uncertain and dynamic situations where logic and algorithms prove inadequate.
Humble Inquiry
Humble inquiry is a powerful approach to building safe environments for people and makes you think about your own behavior in relationships.
A New Earth
Currently reading it for the second time, as it has been a few years since I first read it, and its timeless wisdom resonates just as deeply! This transformative book offers profound insights into mindfulness, self-awareness, and the importance of transcending the ego, empowering readers to awaken to a more purposeful and connected way of living.
Things to listen to
Sometimes, the most profound inspiration comes through our ears. Whether it’s the rhythm of a moving song, the wisdom in a podcast, or the stories brought to life through audio, these recommendations promise to enrich your mind and uplift your mood.
Podcast – The One You Feed
Its foundation—a powerful parable—offers insights that resonate deeply both on a personal and societal level. Listening to podcasts like this during my me-time, whether in the car, running, or cooking, is an effortless way to stay inspired and reflective while going about everyday tasks.
Album – Romance
After a first, already super cool, introduction to Fontaines D.C. at Rock Werchter, this band has stolen my heart. They keep evolving and reinventing themselves musically, daring to go off the beaten track and making no concessions. Grian Chatten’s lyrics and voice manage to touch me again and again. This makes their latest album Romance my absolute favourite of 2024.
Podcast – Masters of Scale
Masters of Scale is a great podcast series. The episode “Is AI a new species” challenged me to view AI not just as a tool but as a transformative force—a “digital species” reshaping human memory and decision-making. It inspired reflection on the ethical responsibilities we hold as technology evolves.
Things to watch
Movies, series, and documentaries have the power to transport us to other worlds, challenge our understanding, and evoke deep emotions. From compelling narratives to fascinating historical explorations, these are the screen experiences that left a lasting impression on us this year.
Down the Road
“Down the Road,” a heartfelt Flemish program, celebrates the unique beauty and resilience of individuals with Down syndrome. In a time when medical advancements, such as non-invasive prenatal testing, are leading to fewer births of children with Down syndrome, this show serves as a poignant reminder of the irreplaceable joy and light they bring to the world. For me, it holds a deeply personal connection, as it resonates with the memory of my late brother, who also had Down syndrome.
Back to Black
A powerful reflection on how life’s struggles can inspire greatness, while reminding us of the resilience needed to navigate challenges.
Lee
Lee Miller’s story resonates because it confronts you with the depth of human experiences: courage alongside vulnerability, happiness alongside loss, beauty alongside horror. Such stories offer a mirror for our own life questions and how we give meaning to our own experiences.
Ted Lasso
An incredible story of how coaching can change lives, told with humour and heart. I love it!
The Diplomat
I binged The Diplomat and was captivated by the powerful yet entertaining portrayal of leadership under pressure. It reveals the resilience, courage, and nuanced decision-making required to navigate high-stakes environments—a true testament to the challenges and strength of modern leadership.
In Vogue
In Vogue is a must-watch for those inspired by the transformative power of vision and culture. This docuseries is not not just a journey through the world of fashion but explores Vogue’s iconic history, celebrating the leadership that has influenced an entire industry.
The Accountant
The ending song “To Leave Something Behind” by Sean Rowe beautifully captures a sense of melancholy, resonating with the feeling of leaving a legacy or reflecting on what we’ve built. A powerful moment for those at a crossroads in their career.
Napoleon’s Greatest Comeback: The Battle of Marengo
This docu demonstrates that even the greatest obstacles can be overcome, no matter how unfavorable the odds, and highlights the importance of having supportive friends, family, or colleagues to help you achieve your goals.
